Standards of Practice of Pharmacy Professionals

The following standards are based on the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) Standards of Practice for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians. NAPRA's Standards of Practice can be found on their website at www.napra.ca by clicking here.

The Provincial Regulatory Authorities require that continuing professional development programs relate to the standards of practice for pharmacy professionals. Program Providers are requested to identify the standard of practice to which their learning activity relates. Based on NAPRA's Standards of Practice, CCCEP has developed a blended set of standards and expanded on those relating medication and drug distribution expertise. 

The standards are in four categories:

  1. Expertise in Medications and Drug Distribution
  2. Collaboration and Communication
  3. Safety and Quality
  4. Professionalism and Ethics

 

 
1. Expertise in Medications and Drug Distribution

1.1. Maintain competence and practice within legal requirements
1.2. Medication/drug expertise – provide patient care*
1.3. Medication/drug expertise – provide drug information
1.4. Medication/drug expertise – drug distribution/supply
1.5. Medication/drug expertise – manage pharmacy
1.6. Medication/drug expertise – educate patients, students, pharmacy team
1.7. Medication/drug expertise – knowledge application and research
1.8. Document practice activities

2. Collaboration and Communication

* Patient Care (Patient Care includes: obtain patient information, assess health status and concerns, determine drug therapy problems, patient care plan, administer drugs, monitor patient outcomes) .
